Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Across the river around the University of Deusto, which makes this the natural student quarter, with lower rents and a short metro into town.
The medieval old town, seven streets and a market hall, atmospheric outside and small inside. Thick with people at the weekend.
West of Abando, residential and well served, close to the hospital and about ten minutes from the Guggenheim on foot.
Places students in Bilbao actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Public reading and study space in the old town.
The core network linking central neighbourhoods, Deusto and routes towards outer campuses.
Large covered food market beside the river in Casco Viejo.
Major free park between central Bilbao and Deusto.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Bilbao spent the twentieth century as a shipbuilding and steel city and the end of it as a byword for post-industrial decline, and then it built the Guggenheim on a derelict riverside and the rest followed. The result is a compact city where the waterfront is twenty five years old and the old town is five hundred. For students the split that matters is institutional: the University of Deusto sits in the city by the river, while the public University of the Basque Country has its main campus out at Leioa, several metro stops down the estuary.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Europe where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
The metro has two lines running along both banks of the estuary out to the coast, and the stations are the ones Norman Foster designed, which locals call fosteritos. Line 1 reaches Leioa for the public university campus, and a Barik card with a student rate covers metro, tram and bus. Bilbao is compact and the riverside walk from the Guggenheim to the old town is flat and pleasant, but the city sits in a narrow valley so the residential districts climb steeply away from the water. Trains reach Madrid in about five hours, which is slow, and the airport is twenty minutes by bus.
