Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Between the University of Melbourne and the city, with Lygon Street running through the middle of it. Victorian terraces and walk-up flats rather than towers, and ten minutes on foot to campus.
The University of Melbourne campus itself, plus the hospitals and research institutes along Royal Parade. Almost no commute, not much nightlife, and the Royal Parade tram covers the difference.
RMIT's city campus is in the middle of the grid and the free tram zone covers all of it. Towers rather than terraces, so ask about the floor, the outlook, and whether the building has anywhere to study.
The Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium, across the river from the CBD on foot. Newer towers, river views at a price, and the free tram zone reaches the Casino end.
Places students in Melbourne actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Free and central, and the La Trobe Reading Room under the dome is the best place to study in the city. Open seven days.
Produce at the Carlton end of the CBD and inside the free tram zone. Go late on a Saturday for whatever the traders want to clear.
Trams cost nothing inside the CBD and Docklands and up as far as Queen Victoria Market. Outside it you touch on, so find the boundary before you choose a suburb.
Domestic full-time students get concession fares with a PTV Tertiary Student ID. International students in Victoria do not qualify, so build full fares into your budget before you arrive.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Melbourne is a campus-led housing search. RMIT is woven through the CBD, the University of Melbourne sits immediately north in Parkville, and Monash students may be travelling to Caulfield or Clayton rather than the city centre. That makes a central postcode less useful than a direct walk, tram, train or bus to the building where you will actually study. The Free Tram Zone helps with journeys inside the CBD and Docklands, but it does not cover most student trips into Carlton, Parkville or the outer campuses, so check the stop boundary before treating a tram journey as free.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Australia where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Melbourne's trains, trams and buses use myki outside the Free Tram Zone. Travel entirely within that central tram zone is free and does not require a myki, but a journey that starts or finishes beyond it is charged. Compare the full door-to-campus route rather than the nearest stop alone. This is especially important for Monash: its Caulfield campus is south-east of the CBD and Clayton is farther out again, so a room that works for RMIT or the University of Melbourne may create a long daily commute for a Monash timetable.
