Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The University of Bristol precinct runs up into Clifton, so this is the short walk for most of its departments. Georgian and Victorian, the most expensive postcode in the city, and the hill back from the centre is steeper than any map suggests.
Traditional second and third year ground, shared Victorian houses a bus ride or a long walk from the precinct. Quiet streets, almost no new blocks, and the Gloucester Road shops at the eastern edge.
Between the two universities and cheaper precisely because it sits between them. Stokes Croft is the loud end, with the murals, the late bars and the noise that comes with both.
Where most of Bristol's purpose-built blocks are, within reach of the Bristol precinct and the UWE shuttle stops. Also flat, which counts for more in this city than in most.
Places students in Bristol actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
On College Green next to the cathedral, free, and a flat walk from the harbourside blocks. Rare in this city, the flat part.
Covered market in the old city with the cheapest lunch in central Bristol. Most of the stalls are weekdays only.
Independent cinema on the harbourside with student tickets, and a bar upstairs that doubles as an afternoon study space.
A co-op selling refurbished second-hand bikes, with workshops where you fix your own. Useful in a city built on hills.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Bristol is two student cities that happen to share a name. The University of Bristol sits in and around Clifton in the middle of town. UWE's main campus is at Frenchay, four miles north. A room that is a ten minute walk for one is a daily bus for the other, and that single fact decides more about a Bristol address than the rent does.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.

Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Bristol is hilly and the walk back up to Clifton is steeper than a map suggests, so check your route in both directions before you commit. Metrobus runs the main north and south corridors, including the m1 towards UWE Frenchay, and Gloucester Road carries frequent services into the centre. Cycling is popular and the Bristol to Bath Railway Path is genuinely useful if you are living east. Temple Meads is the main rail station and sits slightly outside the centre, which matters if you plan to travel home often.
