Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
A village swallowed by the city and still behaving like one: narrow streets, squares that fill up every evening, and no grid. The first place most students name, and priced to match.
The oldest part of Barcelona, taking in the Gothic Quarter and El Born. Atmospheric, central, noisy and heavily touristed, with the smallest flats on this list.
The old industrial east, rebuilt as the technology district and home to Pompeu Fabra's media campus. Wider streets, newer buildings and the beach at the end of them.
Up near the Politècnica's Campus Nord and the business schools, on the upper stretch of Diagonal. Residential, orderly, and the natural choice for engineering students.
West and south of the centre, better value and still walkable in. Sants has the main railway station and Sant Antoni its market hall and the best Sunday in the city.
Places students in Barcelona actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
A large public library at the north end of Gràcia, useful when university libraries are crowded.
The integrated youth travel pass used across Metro, bus, tram and participating rail services. Check the current age rules and zones before buying.
A covered food and neighbourhood market on the edge of Eixample, with a book market around the building on Sundays.
The central park beside Pompeu Fabra's Ciutadella campus, close to El Born and the lower end of Eixample.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Barcelona's universities are not all in Barcelona, and that is the first thing to check. The Universitat de Barcelona teaches in the city, around Plaça Universitat and Diagonal. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona is at Bellaterra, outside the city altogether, reached by a train that takes well over half an hour each way. Pompeu Fabra is split between Ciutadella and Poblenou, and the Politècnica's main engineering campus sits up at Diagonal. Find your building on a map before you fall in love with a neighbourhood.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Europe where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
The Metro covers the city well and the T-jove card gives unlimited travel over three months if you are under thirty, which is the pass most students buy. FGC is the separate railway you need for Bellaterra and the Autònoma, running from Plaça Catalunya. The city is built on a slope from the sea up to Collserola, so a journey that looks flat on the grid may not be, and the Bicing hire scheme has electric bikes for exactly that reason. Barcelona is unusually walkable for its size: Gràcia to the beach is about forty minutes on foot through the whole city.
