Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Golden sandstone from end to end, with the Plaza Mayor in the middle and faculties tucked into the surrounding streets. The dearest address in Salamanca, and often the smallest flats.
Further north west, cheaper again and more residential, with almost no visitors and a twenty minute walk in.
East towards the newer faculties and the hospital, which makes this the practical choice for medics and scientists.
Places students in Salamanca actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Public reading and study space close to the historic centre.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
The Universidad de Salamanca was founded in 1218, which makes it the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest anywhere, and this is a city that has been organised around students for eight centuries rather than a few decades. The faculties are scattered through the sandstone streets of the old town rather than gathered on a campus, a large share of the population is studying, and the city empties noticeably outside term. It is also small: almost everything below is twenty minutes on foot from the Plaza Mayor.

Comparing options? These are the other cities in Europe where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Salamanca barely needs transport. The old town is pedestrianised, the whole city is flat, and the walk from the furthest student district to the Plaza Mayor takes about twenty minutes, so most people here never buy a bus pass. The urban buses exist for the outer districts and the newer faculties, with a reduced student rate. The railway station is north east of the centre with Madrid about an hour and three quarters away on the high-speed service, and Portugal is close enough that Porto is a realistic weekend. A car is a liability in a medieval street plan with almost nowhere to park.
