Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Flemish gables and cobbles north of the centre, the handsomest part of the city and the dearest. Small flats above shops, and everything within ten minutes.
The covered market and the Sunday crowds around it, cheap food and cheap rooms, ten minutes from the middle. The area most Lille students name first.
Beside the law and medical faculties, on metro line 1, and cheaper than anywhere closer to the centre. Its reputation is largely out of date.
A separate commune built around the Cité Scientifique, with lakes, a stadium and its own shops. Rents are well below the city and metro line 1 runs straight in.
Two towns at the end of the metro, former textile centres with the lowest rents in the area and a real journey into Lille. Worth it only if your budget needs it to be.
Places students in Lille actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
The main public library near the centre, with reading and study space.
The key route from central Lille to Pont-de-Bois and the Cité Scientifique campuses.
A major covered and street market in the city’s best-known student neighbourhood.
Large free green space west of the centre and Vauban university district.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Lille sits closer to Brussels than most French cities sit to their own neighbours, and the Eurostar stops here. Brussels is around half an hour by train and London under two, which makes this the easiest base on the site for anyone who wants to travel at weekends. The teaching is spread: law and medicine around the centre, humanities at Pont-de-Bois and the sciences at the Cité Scientifique in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, with both of the latter on metro line 1.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Europe where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Lille's two metro lines are fully automated and run frequently, with trams out to Roubaix and Tourcoing, all on one Ilévia pass with a student rate. Line 1 is the one to know, running from the centre out through Porte de Douai to the Cité Scientifique, and line 2 covers Roubaix and Tourcoing. The centre itself is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes and flat enough to cycle, with the V'Lille hire scheme throughout. Two stations sit side by side: Lille-Flandres for domestic trains and Lille-Europe for Eurostar, Thalys and the TGV to Paris in about an hour.
