Two things about Berlin are out of date in most people's heads. The first is that it is cheap: rents here have risen faster than almost anywhere in Europe over the last decade, the market is tight enough that viewings draw queues, and arriving without a room arranged is a genuine risk. The second is that it is one city centre. Berlin is enormous and polycentric, and its universities are nowhere near each other: Humboldt is on Unter den Linden in the middle, the Technische Universität is west by the Tiergarten, and the Freie Universität is out at Dahlem in the leafy south west.

Getting around Berlin
The BVG network is the reason Berlin's size is manageable: U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses on one ticket, with a semester ticket included in most enrolment fees that covers the whole city. Check what your semester contribution includes before buying anything separately. The S-Bahn ring is the useful mental map, and Dahlem is on the U3 and the S1 rather than anything quick. Berlin is flat and heavily cycled, with the canal and park routes separated from traffic. Hauptbahnhof reaches Hamburg in under two hours, Prague in four and Munich in four, and both airports are on the S-Bahn.
