Where to look in Newcastle upon Tyne

Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.

Where students live in Newcastle upon Tyne

Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.

Haymarket and city centre

Newcastle University's campus begins at Haymarket Metro and Northumbria's starts on the other side of the road. The shortest commute in the city, and where most of the new blocks are.

Sandyford and Shieldfield

The streets immediately east of Northumbria, cheaper than Jesmond and closer in. Shieldfield is largely purpose-built now, Sandyford is flats in Victorian terraces.

Ouseburn

The valley below Jesmond, full of converted warehouses, music venues and the city farm. Few student blocks and a steep walk home, which is why it costs less than the Quayside above it.

Quayside

On the river under the bridges, with the newest and generally the dearest buildings on this page. Both campuses are 15 to 20 minutes uphill.

Fenham and Arthur's Hill

West of the centre towards the General Hospital, cheap and residential. Twenty minutes on foot to Northumbria, or the bus when it rains.

Useful to know nearby

Places students in Newcastle upon Tyne actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.

  • Grainger Market

Victorian covered market in the centre with produce, a fish market, and the smallest Marks and Spencer in the country. Cheapest weekly shop in Newcastle.

  • Newcastle City Library

Six floors on New Bridge Street, free study space and long hours, a few minutes from both campuses.

  • Tyne and Wear Metro

A student Pop card covers the Metro, which runs through Haymarket, Jesmond and West Jesmond and out to the coast. Most of the areas above are on it.

  • Tyneside Cinema

A 1937 newsreel theatre on Pilgrim Street, still running, with student tickets and a standing classics programme.

  • Ouseburn Farm

A free city farm in the Ouseburn valley, ten minutes from the Quayside. Unexpected, and open most days.

What to know before choosing a room in Newcastle upon Tyne

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.

Newcastle is the simplest large student city in England to choose a room in. Newcastle University and Northumbria sit either side of the Haymarket, a few minutes' walk apart, both of them in the city centre. Almost nobody here has to pick an address around a campus, so the question becomes how central you want to be and what you want on your doorstep.

    Getting around Newcastle upon Tyne

The Tyne and Wear Metro is the thing to plan around and it is genuinely good: Haymarket and Monument serve both universities, Jesmond and West Jesmond are one or two stops out, and the line runs to the coast and to the airport. Most central students will not need it daily, because Newcastle's centre is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes. Buses cover Heaton and the west of the city. If you are coming from overseas, the airport is on the Metro line, which is rarer than it sounds.

    Frequently asked questions

    • 31 buildings in Newcastle upon Tyne publish a starting price, from £99 to £305 a week, and half of them start under £166. The range is wide for a single city: the dearest building starts at more than double the cheapest, so the headline figure tells you little until you have picked an area. Each figure is the cheapest room in that building, so compare the room lists rather than the headline.
