Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Portswood Broadway is the student high street and Highfield campus sits at the end of it. The shortest commute in Southampton, which is why a vacancy here never lasts.
Solent University's ground, with the shops, the marina and the ferry terminals. Highfield is a bus ride from here, so it serves Solent students far better than Southampton's.
North of Highfield with a railway station each, which counts if you travel further than campus. Quieter, cheaper, and a level cycle in.
The streets between the centre and the common, with the bars along Bedford Place. Central without marina prices, and the common gives you a green way north.
Places students in Southampton actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Free public study space in the Civic Centre, convenient for Solent students and central accommodation.
The everyday centre of the Highfield student area, with supermarkets, cafes and buses to campus and the city.
Large open space immediately west of Highfield campus, used for the walk between the university and northern neighbourhoods.
The university bus network connecting Highfield, Portswood, the centre and major halls. Check the route against any address before booking.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Southampton has two universities facing opposite directions and one bus network holding the whole arrangement together. The University of Southampton teaches at Highfield, a mile and a half north of the centre, and runs its own Uni-link services between campus, Portswood and the city. Solent University is in the centre itself. Whether a room works here depends almost entirely on whether a Uni-link route passes it.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Uni-link runs the U1, U2, U6 and U9 and the routes are worth checking against any address before you commit, because they are what makes the difference between a five minute journey and a thirty minute walk. Southampton Central is the main station, around an hour and a quarter from London Waterloo, and Swaythling and St Denys serve the northern suburbs. The city is flat and compact enough that cycling works across most of it, and the free CityRed services cover parts of the centre.
