Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The streets between the town and the parkland campus, and the obvious student choice because the walk onto Whiteknights is short. Terraced, and priced with one eye on the commuter market.
Shops, the Thames, the station and the newer blocks. Convenient for trains and the most expensive address here, because London is twenty five minutes away.
South of the centre near the London Road campus, mixed and inexpensive, and ten minutes on foot into town.
Places students in Reading actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Public study space close to the town centre and main bus routes.
Frequent services connecting the station and centre with Whiteknights campus.
Central public gardens between the station side and the river.
Independent cinema and social space in the town centre.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
The thing to understand about Reading is who else wants the room. This is one of the best connected commuter towns in the country: Paddington is under half an hour on a fast train and the Elizabeth line runs from here into central London, so a large part of the rental market is let to people on London salaries. A student is bidding against them. The University of Reading's Whiteknights campus is a parkland site south east of the centre, large and green, and the areas around it are priced with the commuter market in mind rather than the student one.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Reading Buses run a frequent network and the Claret and Emerald routes serve the Whiteknights campus from the town centre in about fifteen minutes. The railway station is one of the busiest interchanges outside London, with Paddington in twenty five minutes on a fast service, the Elizabeth line for stops across the capital, and direct trains to Oxford, Gatwick and the south west. The town is flat and the Thames and Kennet towpaths give traffic-free cycling, which is how a lot of students reach campus. The centre is well provided with buses and badly provided with parking.
