Where to look in Reading
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Where students live in Reading
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Erleigh Road and Whiteknights
The streets between the town and the parkland campus, and the obvious student choice because the walk onto Whiteknights is short. Terraced, and priced with one eye on the commuter market.

Town centre and the Oracle
Shops, the Thames, the station and the newer blocks. Convenient for trains and the most expensive address here, because London is twenty five minutes away.

- Queens Courtfrom £215/week
Whitley and Katesgrove
South of the centre near the London Road campus, mixed and inexpensive, and ten minutes on foot into town.

What to know before choosing a room in Reading
A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
The thing to understand about Reading is who else wants the room. This is one of the best connected commuter towns in the country: Paddington is under half an hour on a fast train and the Elizabeth line runs from here into central London, so a large part of the rental market is let to people on London salaries. A student is bidding against them. The University of Reading's Whiteknights campus is a parkland site south east of the centre, large and green, and the areas around it are priced with the commuter market in mind rather than the student one.

Getting around Reading
Reading Buses run a frequent network and the Claret and Emerald routes serve the Whiteknights campus from the town centre in about fifteen minutes. The railway station is one of the busiest interchanges outside London, with Paddington in twenty five minutes on a fast service, the Elizabeth line for stops across the capital, and direct trains to Oxford, Gatwick and the south west. The town is flat and the Thames and Kennet towpaths give traffic-free cycling, which is how a lot of students reach campus. The centre is well provided with buses and badly provided with parking.

Frequently asked questions
- 7 buildings in Reading publish a starting price, from £205 to £328 a week, and half of them start under £250. Most of the difference is area and room type rather than one or two outliers. Each figure is the cheapest room in that building, so compare the room lists rather than the headline.
- Everything we list in Reading is in Erleigh Road and Whiteknights, Town centre and the Oracle, and Whitley and Katesgrove. Buildings are filed by their coordinates, not by the area their marketing claims, so the table above puts each one where it actually stands.
- 4 of the 7 buildings here say so, and 3 publish nothing either way. A page that says nothing is a gap in what the building has told anyone, not a bill, so ask before you rule it out.
