Where students live in Oxford
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Cowley Road and East Oxford
A mile of restaurants, record shops and music venues with terraced streets behind, and the centre of Oxford's non-college student life. Flat, and five minutes into town on a bike.

- The Mewsfrom £220/week
Headington and Marston
Above the city to the east, where Oxford Brookes teaches and the hospitals sit. The obvious answer if you are at Brookes, and the one address here where the climb counts.

- Beech Housefrom £202/week
Jericho and Walton Street
The canal-side streets north west of the centre, with the Phoenix cinema and a run of small restaurants. Among the prettiest and dearest, and heavily postgraduate.

Botley and Osney
West over the Thames, with Port Meadow and the river at the door and a level run into the centre. Less per week than anything on the Cowley side for the same time on a bike.

What to know before choosing a room in Oxford
A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Oxford's rental market works differently from most university cities, because the University of Oxford houses the majority of its undergraduates in college for the length of their degree. The people looking for a private room here are largely Oxford Brookes students, postgraduates, and Oxford undergraduates out of college for a year. Brookes teaches mainly at Headington, east of the centre and up the hill, which is why the student geography leans that way.

Getting around Oxford
Oxford is a cycling city first and it is unusually well set up for it: the centre is flat, the routes are direct, and most students here own a bike rather than a bus pass. The exception is Headington, which involves a real hill. The Oxford Bus Company and Stagecoach run frequent services along Cowley Road, London Road and the Banbury Road corridor. Oxford station reaches London Paddington in under an hour and Birmingham in about an hour and a quarter, and the Oxford Tube runs coaches to London through the night. Driving in the centre is heavily restricted and parking is close to non-existent.

Frequently asked questions
- 7 buildings in Oxford publish a starting price, from £190 to £349 a week, and half of them start under £285. Most of the difference is area and room type rather than one or two outliers. Each figure is the cheapest room in that building, so compare the room lists rather than the headline.
- The buildings spread across 5 areas, led by Cowley Road and East Oxford, Headington and Marston, Jericho and Walton Street, and Botley and Osney. Each is filed by its coordinates rather than by the area its marketing claims, so the table above puts every building where it actually stands.
- 9 of the 13 buildings here say so, and 4 publish nothing either way. A page that says nothing is a gap in what the building has told anyone, not a bill, so ask before you rule it out.
