Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores' Byrom Street side both sit on this hill, with most of the new blocks between them. Nothing here is more than ten minutes from a lecture theatre.
The terraces between the two cathedrals, and the best looking part of the city to live in. Flats in Georgian houses rather than new build, and the walk to campus is downhill one way only.
Bold Street, the bars, and the blocks around Lime Street. John Moores is spread across the centre, so this suits its students better than Liverpool's.
East of the university and the cheapest streets still within walking distance of it. Terraced housing, 15 minutes to Brownlow Hill, and Edge Hill station, which is the oldest still in use anywhere.
Places students in Liverpool actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
On William Brown Street, free, with the domed Picton reading room at the heart of it. Ten minutes downhill from the Knowledge Quarter.
Cinema and galleries on Wood Street in the Ropewalks, with student tickets and a programme that goes a long way past the multiplex.
A hundred and twenty acres with a palm house in the middle and Lark Lane along one edge for cafes. The reason people accept the commute from Aigburth.
Two underground lines through the city centre reach Aigburth and the southern suburbs in minutes. Student tickets exist and the network is better than the bus map makes it look.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Liverpool is unusually easy to place a student in. The University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores do not really have separate campuses, more a set of interleaved buildings around Brownlow Hill and Mount Pleasant, so a central room generally works for either. Liverpool Hope is the exception, out at Childwall, and that one is a proper commute.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Liverpool's centre is compact and most students walk to teaching, which is the main reason the city is cheaper to live in than its size implies. Merseyrail covers the wider city and is quick if you are further out, and buses run frequently along Smithdown Road and Kensington into the centre. The one route worth checking properly is Childwall for Liverpool Hope, which is a real bus journey rather than a walk, and worth timing at nine in the morning before you take a room on that side of the city.
