Where to look in Leeds

Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.

Where students live in Leeds

Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.

Hyde Park and Woodhouse

The main undergraduate area, a flat ten minute walk from the University of Leeds and the one place in the city where the streets are almost entirely students. Back-to-back terraces, the Hyde Park Picture House, and more noise than you would get in Headingley.

Burley and Kirkstall

West of Hyde Park and cheaper for being one step further from campus. Terraced streets, the Kirkstall Road retail park for a weekly shop, and a 25 minute walk to the university.

City centre and the Arena Quarter

Most of the purpose-built blocks are here, between Leeds Beckett's city campus and the arena. You are five minutes from the station and the shops, and paying centre rates for it.

Holbeck and Holbeck Urban Village

South of the station in converted mills, closer to the centre than Hyde Park and usually cheaper. Fewer students, fewer shops, and the walk back crosses the motorway slip roads.

Useful to know nearby

Places students in Leeds actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.

  • Leeds Central Library

Free study space in the centre, open late in term and a quieter alternative to the campus libraries once exams start.

  • Kirkgate Market

One of the largest covered markets in Europe. Cheap fruit, veg and fish, five minutes from the city centre blocks.

  • The Edge

The University of Leeds gym and pool, on campus. Cheaper than any commercial membership if you are a Leeds student.

  • Hyde Park Picture House

A century-old independent cinema in the middle of the main student area, with student tickets.

A few Leeds buildings worth a look

Picked by distance, price and choice, measured from the listings on this page. Not a ranking, and not a recommendation: the numbers are what they are on the day you read this.

What to know before choosing a room in Leeds

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.

Most big English cities make you pick a campus first. Leeds does not. The University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett's city campus sit next to each other on the northern edge of the centre, so one belt of housing serves both. What you are actually choosing is how far up the Hyde Park and Headingley corridor to live, and how long you want to walk in January.

    Getting around Leeds

Leeds is one of the more walkable big English student cities: Hyde Park to campus is a genuine walk rather than a bus ride. Beyond that, Otley Road carries very frequent buses in and out of Headingley and they are busy at nine in the morning. Leeds has no tram or metro, so buses and walking are the whole picture in the city, with the rail station in the centre for travel further afield. Cycling is improving but the city is hillier than people expect north of the centre.

    Frequently asked questions

    • 38 buildings in Leeds publish a starting price, from £75 to £310 a week, and half of them start under £169. The range is wide for a single city: the dearest building starts at more than double the cheapest, so the headline figure tells you little until you have picked an area. Each figure is the cheapest room in that building, so compare the room lists rather than the headline.
