Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The campus below the cathedral and the housing attached to it, which removes the commute and most of the choice at once.
The cobbled hill, the theatre, the shops and the station, at the highest prices in the area because London is thirty five minutes away.
Places students in Guildford actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
The main campus study library on Stag Hill, open for long hours during term.
The key connection for London, Portsmouth and Reading, below the Stag Hill campus.
Regular town-centre market on the High Street for local food and produce.
Flat traffic-free walking and cycling route through the town and towards Godalming.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Guildford is a prosperous Surrey town where a student competes with London commuters for every room, and the rents reflect that rather than anything about the university. The University of Surrey occupies Stag Hill, immediately below the cathedral and about fifteen minutes uphill from the railway station, with the Manor Park residences across the road. London Waterloo is a little over half an hour away, the North Downs start at the edge of town, and almost nothing here is cheap.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Guildford station is the pivot: London Waterloo in about thirty five minutes, Portsmouth south, Reading north west on the line through Aldershot, and Gatwick east. A season ticket to London is a serious expense, so check whether you actually need one. Stagecoach runs the town buses and the campus is served frequently from the station and the town. The walk from the station up to Stag Hill is fifteen minutes and genuinely steep, which is the detail people underestimate. The Wey navigation towpath gives a flat traffic-free route south, and the Downs behind the town are walking country rather than cycling country.
