Where to look in Glasgow

Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.

Where students live in Glasgow

Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.

Hillhead and the West End

The University of Glasgow's main campus and the streets around Byres Road. Subway at Hillhead, tenements above the shops, and the highest rents in the city in exchange for the shortest walk.

Kelvinbridge and Woodlands

Between the university and the city centre, on the subway and the Kelvin walkway. Woodlands is the cheaper half and the one most first years find.

Partick and Hyndland

West of the campus with a subway station, a rail station and the Clyde at the foot of it. Partick is roughly where the West End stops being expensive.

Finnieston and Yorkhill

Along the river between town and the West End, grown up around the Hydro and the Argyle Street restaurants. Twenty minutes to the university on foot, fifteen into town.

Merchant City and city centre

Strathclyde and City of Glasgow College are here, and so is most of Glasgow's purpose-built student housing. Flat, central, and loud at the weekend.

Dennistoun and Townhead

East of the centre beside Strathclyde's campus, and the cheapest thing within walking distance of it. Victorian tenements, Alexandra Park, 15 minutes into town.

Useful to know nearby

Places students in Glasgow actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.

  • Mitchell Library

One of the largest public reference libraries in Europe, free, on North Street between the centre and the West End. Floors of desks and nearly always a free one.

  • Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

Free, and ten minutes on foot from the University of Glasgow. The organ recital at one o'clock is a real thing that happens every day.

  • Glasgow Subway

Fifteen stations on one circle, with a student season ticket. Hillhead, Kelvinbridge, Partick, Govan and Ibrox are all on it, which is why the West End and the Southside feel closer than the map suggests.

  • The Barras

Weekend market in the Gallowgate, east of the centre. Secondhand everything, with the Barrowland Ballroom upstairs for gigs.

A few Glasgow buildings worth a look

Picked by distance, price and choice, measured from the listings on this page. Not a ranking, and not a recommendation: the numbers are what they are on the day you read this.

What to know before choosing a room in Glasgow

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.

Glasgow's student geography is settled by a single underground line. The Subway runs one circle, linking the West End where the University of Glasgow sits to the centre where Strathclyde and Caledonian are, and most commutes here are one or two stops. That matters more than it sounds, because it means the usual trade between rent and travel barely applies: you are not choosing between a cheap room far out and an expensive room near campus, you are choosing between a tenement flat in the West End and a purpose built room in town, both about fifteen minutes from everything. Glasgow is also one of the cheapest big cities on this site, and the gap is wide enough to change what you can afford to study on.

    Getting around Glasgow

The Subway is a single circular line and it is the thing to plan around: Hillhead, Kelvinbridge and Partick on the west side, Buchanan Street and St Enoch in the centre. It is quick, it is cheap, and it shuts earlier than any metro you have used, around half past eleven on weeknights and six on a Sunday, so check the last train before you rely on it for a late library session. Buses run later and cover the gaps, the Southside is better served by train than by Subway, and the city is flat enough that a West End to centre walk along the Kelvin is a genuine option in decent weather. Queen Street and Central stations are both in the middle of town, with Edinburgh under an hour from Queen Street.

    Frequently asked questions

    • 44 buildings in Glasgow publish a starting price, from £118 to £259 a week, and half of them start under £180. Most of the difference is area and room type rather than one or two outliers. Each figure is the cheapest room in that building, so compare the room lists rather than the headline.
