Where to look in Exeter

Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.

Where students live in Exeter

Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.

St James and Pennsylvania

Directly below Streatham campus, so these are the shortest walks in Exeter and the first streets to be taken. Pennsylvania Road climbs steeply; St James is flatter and nearer Exeter Central.

City centre and the Quay

The purpose-built blocks, the shops, and the canal path at the Quay. Everything except the campus is on the doorstep, and the campus is that twenty minute climb.

Mount Pleasant and Newtown

East of the centre, flatter and cheaper, with a longer and duller walk up to Streatham. Newtown has the convenience shops and Mount Pleasant the bigger houses.

St Thomas and Exwick

Across the Exe, and the cheapest rooms from which the commute still works. Its own station, a flat riverside walk into town, and then the hill.

Useful to know nearby

Places students in Exeter actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.

  • Exeter Library

Free desks and public facilities in the centre, useful when campus libraries are busy or you live below Streatham hill.

  • Exeter Quayside

A flat riverside route for walking and cycling, in sharp contrast to the climb towards Streatham campus.

  • Exeter Central station

The useful station for the city centre and campus side. Long-distance services more often use St Davids at the bottom of the hill.

  • The RAMM

Exeter's free city museum on Queen Street, beside Central station and within an easy walk of central accommodation.

A few Exeter buildings worth a look

What to know before choosing a room in Exeter

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.

The first thing to understand about living in Exeter is the hill. The University of Exeter's Streatham campus sits at the top of it, the city centre and the stations sit at the bottom, and the walk between them is about twenty minutes down and rather longer back up. Every area here is really a question about which end of that slope you want to wake up on, and the rent broadly follows the contour lines.

    Getting around Exeter

The university runs its own bus services up to Streatham, and they are the reason living at the bottom of the hill is workable rather than punishing. Exeter has two main stations: Central, which is a few minutes from the centre and the campus side, and St Davids, which is where the London and Bristol trains stop. Cycling is popular along the Exe valley and the canal, where it is flat, and much less so up to campus. London Paddington is around two and a half hours and Bristol about an hour, so weekend travel is straightforward.

    • Everything we list in Exeter is in St James and Pennsylvania, City centre and the Quay, Mount Pleasant and Newtown, and St Thomas and Exwick. Buildings are filed by their coordinates, not by the area their marketing claims, so the table above puts each one where it actually stands.
