Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The terraces under the railway arches west of the station, almost entirely students, and the best known address in Durham's private market. Ten minutes down to the Bailey and no hill on the way out.
East of the market place, cheaper than the Viaduct and closer to the shops. The walk back from town is short and steep in equal measure.
Across the river on the hill side, next to the Students' Union and the Science Site. The right bank if your teaching is up at Elvet Hill rather than on the peninsula.
West along the A167 towards the viaduct, more residential, better value, and for once a walk into the centre that stays level.
Places students in Durham actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Public study space in the centre, useful away from college and university libraries.
A hillside park beside the station with views across the cathedral and city.
Durham’s covered market for food and everyday shopping in the centre.
Traffic-free walking routes linking colleges, Elvet and the peninsula, with steep exits in places.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Durham is the smallest city we list and the one where geography decides the most. The cathedral and castle sit on a peninsula inside a loop of the Wear, the older colleges line the Bailey beside them, and the science and social science departments are up on Elvet Hill to the south. Most first years live in college, so the private market here is second and third years, postgraduates, and it runs through a surprisingly small number of streets.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Durham is a walking city and the distances are genuinely short, but it is also steep: the climb from the river up to the Bailey and the pull up to Elvet Hill are the two that people mention. Durham station is on the East Coast Main Line, high above the city and a brisk ten minutes from the centre, with Newcastle fifteen minutes away and London under three hours. The Cathedral Bus runs between the station, the market place and the peninsula, and Arriva covers the outer areas. Cycling is possible but the gradients mean few people bother, and much of the centre is pedestrianised with a congestion charge on the peninsula.
