Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Derby sits at the bottom edge of the Peak District, which is closer than most people realise: the first hills are about twenty minutes north and the Derwent Valley Mills, where the factory system was invented, run up the river from the city. The University of Derby's main site is on Kedleston Road, a mile north west of the centre, with Derby College and the newer buildings nearer town. Rolls-Royce and Toyota are both major employers here, which gives the city a strong engineering slant.

Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Derby is flat and the walk from the campus to the city centre takes about twenty minutes along Kedleston Road. Arriva and Trent Barton run the buses and the Unibus connects the university sites. Derby station is east of the centre on the Midland Main Line, with Nottingham in half an hour, Birmingham forty minutes and London St Pancras around an hour and a half. The Derwent Valley cycle route runs north from the city through the mill villages and into the Peak foothills, traffic free for much of it, which is the best thing about getting around here.
