Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The housing that backs straight onto the Essex campus, so the commute is measured in minutes, and it goes quiet the moment teaching stops. The first place anyone here looks.
Along the Colne between the campus and the town, with its own railway halt and a steady run of newer blocks. Industrial edges, good connections.
South of the centre, terraced and less expensive, with a longer walk and no particular student concentration.
North of the town, residential and further from everything, with a country park attached. Cheap, and you will want the bus timetable.
Places students in Colchester actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Public study space in the historic centre.
Services connecting the town centre, Hythe and the University of Essex at Wivenhoe Park.
Large free public park beside the town centre and main shopping streets.
A local rail stop near riverside student housing and routes towards the university.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain and the University of Essex is one of the newest-looking campuses in it, which makes for an odd pair. The Roman walls, the castle and the high street sit in the middle; Essex is two miles east at Wivenhoe Park, built in the 1960s around a sequence of raised concrete squares and towers. Almost nothing about living here is decided by the town, and almost everything by how far you want to be from those squares.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
The 61, 62 and 64 buses run between the town and the Essex campus and are the service most students here rely on; allow fifteen to twenty minutes. Colchester has three stations and the distinction matters: Colchester Town is central, Colchester mainline station is a walk north west of the centre with the fast London services, and Hythe and Wivenhoe both sit on the branch line past the campus. London Liverpool Street is around an hour. The town and the campus are both flat and the riverside path along the Colne makes a decent traffic-free cycle between them.
