Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Woodville Road and the streets leading off it, where Cardiff University's buildings and its students' houses are interleaved street by street. Nothing in the UK is more concentrated: expect noise, and expect everything to be five minutes away.
Over Crwys Road from Cathays, with Albany Road for shopping and Roath Park and its lake at the top. The standard move for anyone who has had enough of Cathays but not of the short walk to lectures.
Towers above the shops, beside Cardiff Central and the stadium. Good if your teaching is scattered, and the only address here where you hear a Wales match from indoors.
Built around the University Hospital of Wales, where Cardiff's medics and dentists spend their clinical years. Residential, well bussed, and a long way from the Cathays evening.
Places students in Cardiff actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Free public study space beside the central station and shopping streets, convenient for students living in the centre.
The large riverside park between the centre and Cardiff University. Its paths form one of the easiest walking and cycling routes north.
The station inside the main student area, one stop from Queen Street and immediately beside Cardiff University buildings.
A lake and open park at the northern end of Roath, one reason students accept the longer walk from streets further out.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Cardiff does something few cities manage: its main campus and its main student area occupy the same ground. Cardiff University is spread through Cathays Park and the streets immediately north of it, and those streets are where most of its students live. You can finish a lecture and be home in five minutes, which is why Cathays stays full and why the rest of the city is priced against it.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Most of Cardiff's student travel is on foot, because the distances in Cathays and Roath are short and the city is flat. Cathays station sits on the Valley Lines and is one stop from Cardiff Queen Street, which is the hub for everything else including Cardiff Bay and Llandaff North. Buses cover the Met campuses and the outer suburbs, and Nextbike stands are spread across the centre. Cardiff Central reaches Bristol in under an hour and London Paddington in around two, and the city is compact enough that a bike removes the need for anything else.
