Start with your university
Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Where to look in Brighton
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Where students live in Brighton
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Falmer and Stanmer
Sussex and Brighton's Falmer campus share this ground, with a station on the doorstep and Stanmer Park behind. Almost nothing else is here, so plan your evenings around the train timetable.
- Alumno Falmerfrom £220/week
Lewes Road and Bevendean
The artery between the city and Falmer, and where most of Brighton's purpose-built student housing stands. The 25 runs along it all night, which is the point.
- iQ Brightonfrom £233/week
- Student Castle Brightonprice on enquiry
Moulsecoomb and Coldean
Up the valley between the city and Falmer, cheaper than either, and next to the University of Brighton's Moulsecoomb site. Hillier than the bus route makes it feel.
- Moulsecoomb Placefrom £180/week
- Hillfort Housefrom £209/week
Hanover and Elm Grove
Terraces stacked up the hill east of the centre, painted in colours you will recognise from postcards. Hugely popular, and the climb home is genuinely steep.
- Ravilious House, Brightonfrom £249/week
- Pavilion Pointfrom £199/week
- iQ Abacus Housefrom £199/week
North Laine and city centre
The lanes, the independent shops and the sea five minutes away. The liveliest and the priciest, and the one area where you are paying for Brighton itself rather than for proximity to a campus.
- Crown House, Brightonfrom £250/week

- Jubilee Library
Free public study space in the North Laine, close to central student accommodation.
- The 25 bus
The principal student route from the centre along Lewes Road to Moulsecoomb and Falmer.
- The Level
A central park between the North Laine and Lewes Road, on the route towards the university campuses.
- Brighton Open Market
A covered neighbourhood market off London Road, useful from Lewes Road and central areas.

What to know before choosing a room in Brighton
A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Brighton is the tightest market we list in the UK, and not because of distance. It is a small city hemmed in by the Downs and the sea, with two universities, a large commuter population earning London salaries, and nowhere to expand. Sussex and much of the University of Brighton teach at Falmer, four miles inland and a short train ride from the centre. The useful thing to know is that rooms go early here, and waiting rarely improves your options.

Getting around Brighton
The 25 bus along Lewes Road runs between the centre and Falmer constantly and is how most students make that trip; the train from Brighton to Falmer takes under ten minutes and is quicker when it lines up. The city is small enough to walk end to end along the seafront, though the streets north of the centre are considerably steeper than they look on a map. Brighton station reaches London Victoria in about an hour and Gatwick in half of that. Cycling is popular along the coast road and much less fun on the hills inland.
Frequently asked questions
- 13 buildings in Brighton publish a starting price, from £180 to £250 a week, and half of them start under £215. They sit unusually close together, so in Brighton the choice is about location and room rather than price. Each figure is the cheapest room in that building, so compare the room lists rather than the headline.
- The buildings spread across 5 areas, led by Falmer and Stanmer, Lewes Road and Bevendean, Moulsecoomb and Coldean, and Hanover and Elm Grove. Each is filed by its coordinates rather than by the area its marketing claims, so the table above puts every building where it actually stands.
- Nearly all of them: 12 of 15. The remaining 3 publish nothing either way, which is not the same as charging extra, and each property page says which of the two it is.
