Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Bedford's main student decision is whether to live beside the University of Bedfordshire campus on Polhill Avenue or closer to the town centre and railway station. The campus lies north-east of the centre, beyond Bedford Park, so a central address adds a regular walk, cycle or bus. Campus-side accommodation keeps lectures simple; the centre gives easier access to shops, the river and trains. Choose that trade-off before comparing gyms, lounges or room finishes.

Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Bedford is relatively compact, and walking or cycling works well between the centre, Bedford Park and Polhill Avenue. Local buses serve the campus side, although evening and weekend frequency should be checked against teaching and work hours. Bedford station is west of the centre and useful for longer journeys, but it is not beside the university; allow for the onward trip when arriving with luggage. The riverside paths are helpful east-west routes through town, while the most direct campus journey usually runs north of the river.
