What to know before choosing a room in Sheffield

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.

Sheffield is compact enough to cross on foot, but the slope matters almost as much as the mileage. The University of Sheffield runs west from the city centre around Western Bank, while Sheffield Hallam's City Campus begins beside the railway station and its Collegiate Campus sits towards Ecclesall Road. A room between West Street and Devonshire Green can work for both universities. Move north towards Kelham Island or south towards Sharrow and the price or atmosphere may improve, but the walk to your own teaching building becomes the deciding detail.

The city centre has the largest concentration of managed student buildings, shops and late-night venues, and it is especially practical for Sheffield Hallam's City Campus. West Street, Devonshire Quarter and the streets around the University of Sheffield shorten the journey to Western Bank. Broomhall lies between the main campuses and Ecclesall Road, while Sharrow and Hunters Bar give you independent shops and more conventional residential streets. Crookes and Broomhill are established University of Sheffield areas on higher ground. Kelham Island has converted industrial buildings and newer apartments north of the centre, but check the uphill route back to campus before choosing it.

Central Sheffield has a broad choice of purpose-built student accommodation. An en-suite room gives you a private bathroom and a kitchen shared with a cluster flat; a studio adds your own cooking space; and some buildings offer larger apartments for couples or friends. Compare the kitchen-sharing group, floor, storage and exact room size rather than treating every room with the same label as equivalent.

Shared student houses are common in Broomhall, Crookes, Broomhill, Sharrow and around Ecclesall Road. They can suit an established group and offer more living space, but bills, broadband and summer rent may sit outside the advertised figure. Check whether the address works for your campus: a house popular with University of Sheffield students is not automatically convenient for every Sheffield Hallam course.

Contract length, included utilities, laundry, deposits and regular bus or tram travel can change which room is genuinely cheaper.

Getting around Sheffield

Walking works for many central journeys, provided you check the gradient as well as the distance. The blue and yellow Supertram routes meet around the city centre and serve University of Sheffield, West Street and the railway station; they are useful when your home and campus sit on the same line. Buses do more of the work for Ecclesall Road, Hunters Bar, Broomhill and Crookes. Sheffield station is below the centre beside Hallam's City Campus, so returning to accommodation around West Street or Western Bank involves an uphill final stretch. Cycling can be quick, but the climb and secure storage deserve attention before you rely on it every day.
