Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The university's own ground, so teaching and the blocks share the same few streets. Next to the station, and built around the Guildhall rather than a campus green.
North east of the centre with Fratton station in the middle, terraced and markedly cheaper than Southsea. Where a lot of people go once they have seen one year's rent.
The historic harbour and the waterfront flats beside it, the most expensive addresses on the island. Spectacular, and not where the student market lives.
Places students in Portsmouth actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Public study space in the Guildhall area, beside university buildings and central accommodation.
A broad seafront open space within walking distance of Southsea and the university quarter.
Rail, bus and ferry connections beside Portsmouth Harbour, useful for Gunwharf and Old Portsmouth.
Southsea’s main independent shopping and food street, surrounded by shared student housing.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Portsmouth is built on Portsea Island, and almost everything else about living here follows from that. It is one of the most densely populated places in the United Kingdom, there is no room to spread outwards, and leaving means a bridge or a train. The University of Portsmouth is spread through the middle of the city around the Guildhall rather than sitting on a campus, so most students are within walking distance of teaching whether they planned to be or not.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
The island is small enough that cycling covers it end to end in about half an hour, and the seafront route is flat and separated from traffic. Portsmouth has three useful stations: Portsmouth and Southsea for the city centre, Portsmouth Harbour for the Isle of Wight ferries and Gosport, and Fratton for the north east. First and Stagecoach buses run the length of the island. London Waterloo is around an hour and three quarters and Southampton under an hour. A car is a liability here, because parking on the island is scarce and mostly permit controlled.
