Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The castle, the market and the pubs, and where most students who leave campus go. The bus to Bailrigg leaves from here constantly, which is the whole reason it works.
East of the centre up the hill, terraced and consistently the cheapest option with a short walk into town. A reliable source of shared houses.
Places students in Lancaster actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Free public study space close to the city-centre bus stops for Bailrigg.
The frequent A6 services joining the centre, Scotforth and Lancaster University.
The city-centre market for food and everyday shopping, held around Market Square.
A flat walking and cycling route through the city, useful because many surrounding streets climb.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Lancaster University is not in Lancaster, quite. It sits at Bailrigg about three miles south of the city on a self-contained collegiate campus with its own shops, bars and library, and the city is a bus ride away down the A6. The University of Cumbria has a campus much closer in. That gap is the whole decision here: campus living puts you next to teaching and a long way from a city, and city living reverses both.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
The 2, 2A and 4 buses between the city and Bailrigg run every few minutes through the day and late into the evening, and they are the single most important thing to check against any address. The ride takes around fifteen minutes. Cycling the campus route is popular and there is a dedicated path for much of it, though the last stretch climbs. Lancaster station is on the West Coast Main Line, which puts Manchester at about an hour, Glasgow at two and a half and London around two and a half, so this is an easy city to leave at a weekend.
