Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The village on the hill beside Royal Holloway: a pub, a shop, and Windsor Great Park starting where the houses stop. Minutes from teaching and the first place anyone looks.
Below the hill, with the station, the high street and the bulk of the newer blocks. Forty minutes to Waterloo straight off the platform.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Royal Holloway belongs to the University of London and sits nineteen miles outside it, in Surrey. Its campus is at Egham on the edge of Windsor Great Park, built around a Victorian pile modelled on a French chateau, and the nearest thing to a city is Staines a few miles east. Students here get a University of London degree, a genuinely rural campus and a train into Waterloo, but they do not get London on the doorstep, and anybody budgeting for zone 2 rents and zone 2 nightlife should know that first.

Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Egham station runs into London Waterloo in about forty minutes, and Staines is a junction with more frequent services and a line to Windsor and Reading. That train is the lifeline here: there is no Underground, and a Travelcard does not reach Egham, so London trips are a paid journey rather than a zone fare. First Bus and the university shuttle connect the campus, Egham and Staines. Heathrow is unusually close, about twenty minutes, which is a real advantage for international students arriving or going home. The land around the campus is gently hilly and the park paths make good cycling.
