Pick a university and see the buildings around it, with the walk or the ride to campus on every one.
Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
Victorian terraces clustered round the main university building, with the pubs and a view out over the Menai Strait. The student heart of the city and worth the hill.
Below the slope, with the shops, the station and the cheaper rooms. Flat to walk around, and a proper climb back up at the end of a night.

Bangor is a small cathedral city wedged between the Menai Strait and the mountains of Eryri, and it is the only place on this site where a student can be on a 3,000 foot summit within an hour of a lecture. Bangor University is split across the hill: the main arts building and the older halls are up in Upper Bangor, the science and business buildings are down near the High Street, and the walk between them is the single thing everybody mentions about living here.

Comparing options? These are the other cities in the UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Bangor is a walking city with one serious hill in it, and the fifteen minutes between Upper Bangor and the High Street is about ten of those minutes going up. Arriva and the university shuttle cover the campus sites, the hospital and Menai Bridge. Bangor station is on the North Wales coast line with Chester about an hour and a quarter away, Manchester around two and a half and Holyhead for the Dublin ferry in forty minutes. Cycling along the Strait on the Lon Las Menai is flat and lovely; cycling anywhere inland is not. The mountains are reachable by bus from the city centre.
