Every distance below is a straight line from the campus address above to the building's own address, so it is the same measurement for all of them. A real walk or bus journey is longer, and in a city with a river or a hill it can be a lot longer, so treat these as a shortlist rather than a commute time.

61How these distances are worked out
We take the coordinates of the campus address at the top of this page and the coordinates of each building, and measure the straight-line distance between them. Nothing here is a typed-in estimate, and a building we cannot locate is left off rather than given a guessed distance.
Two things that follow from that. A straight line is always shorter than the walk, so add time for roads, rivers and hills. And a university with more than one site is measured from the address above, so if your teaching is somewhere else, check the distance to that site instead.
What to check before you enquire
Distance is one factor and rarely the deciding one. Ask every building the same questions and compare the answers rather than the rents.
- Price. Is this exact room still available at this rent for my move-in date?
- Deposit. How much, when is it due, and what is refundable?
- Bills. What does the rent actually cover, and what is charged on top?
- Booking fee. Is there a booking fee or admin charge, and does it come off the rent?
- Tenancy length. Does the contract match my course dates?
- Guarantor. Do I need a UK guarantor, a guarantor service, or to pay upfront?
- Visa. If my visa is refused, is the booking cancelled, and by when do I have to tell them?
- Cancellation. How long is the cooling-off period, and what happens after it?

- We list 1 building within 1.5 miles of Victoria University of Wellington, and each one shows its own distance. These are straight-line measurements, so the walk is longer.
- The cheapest room we hold within 1.5 miles of Victoria University of Wellington starts at NZ$300 a week. Each figure is the starting price for that building's cheapest room type.
- Everything we list for this campus is already walkable, between 0.7 miles and 0.7 miles from the address, so the choice is about price, room type and what the rent covers rather than distance. Check where your own teaching happens before you settle it, because a university on several sites can put a “close” room on the wrong side of the city.
- None of the 1 building within 1.5 miles of Victoria University of Wellington publishes what the rent covers, so treat every price here as rent only until you have asked. Heating, electricity, water and WiFi on top can add meaningfully to a weekly figure.
- Some buildings require one, and usually only if you want to pay in instalments rather than in full. Others accept a guarantor service for a fee, an international guarantor, or rent paid upfront. It is worth settling early, because it changes which rooms are realistic for you.
- Of the 1 building we list near Victoria University of Wellington, 1 let whole apartments, and 1 publish en-suite or private bathrooms.
