Auckland is built across about fifty extinct volcanoes on a narrow neck of land between two harbours, which means the flat route is rarely the direct one. The University of Auckland and AUT are both in the city centre, a few minutes apart along Symonds Street on the ridge above the port, so the commute for most students here is short and uphill rather than long. It is also the most expensive housing market in New Zealand, and the central areas below are priced accordingly.

Getting around Auckland
Auckland Transport runs trains, buses and ferries on one AT HOP card, with a tertiary concession for eligible students that is worth applying for in your first week. The train lines are the practical way in from Newmarket, Kingsland and Mount Eden, and the City Rail Link has reshaped journeys through the centre. The ferries to Devonport and the islands are a genuine commuting option as well as a day out. The central ridge means walking is short but seldom level, and while the cycleways have improved a great deal the hills remain. Check your own concession eligibility with Auckland Transport rather than assuming it.
