Use these established student areas as starting points, then compare each property's rent and route to your university.
Areas students actually take rooms in, with the buildings closest to each one. Matched by location, so a building appears under the area it stands in rather than the area its marketing claims.
The University of Sydney's main campus and the hospital beside it. Terraces and low blocks, a short walk to Newtown for food, and the strongest demand of the five because the commute is a walk across the lawn.
The southern edge of the University of Sydney, between City Road and Redfern station. Cheaper than Camperdown and closer to the trains, terraces with some newer infill.
UNSW's main campus, out towards Randwick on the light rail. Less a student quarter than Camperdown and more an ordinary suburb, with Coogee a bus ride away.
UTS and Notre Dame sit at the southern end near Central. Towers, and the right answer if your campus is in the city, but you are paying city rent for one room.
Places students in Sydney actually use. We have no arrangement with any of them.
Free, on Macquarie Street beside the Botanic Garden. The Mitchell reading room needs a library card, which takes about five minutes to get.
Concession Opal is for eligible full-time students, and most international students in New South Wales are not eligible. Check your own status rather than assuming the discounted fare.
Fruit and vegetables at Haymarket, the southern end of the CBD near UTS. Cheapest late on a Sunday.
Two kilometres of cheap food, bookshops and live music, twenty minutes on foot from the University of Sydney. Where most people end up on a Friday.

A city-by-city note about the decisions that change your daily routine. Prices and availability remain live in the listings above.
Settle your campus before you look at a single room here. The University of Sydney sits at Camperdown on the inner west edge of the centre, close enough to Newtown to walk to dinner. UNSW is four miles south east at Kensington and has no train line, only a light rail that takes about twenty minutes from Central. The housing around each of them is priced and let separately, so a room that looks good value on one side of the city can cost you an hour a day if you are studying on the other. Rents are the highest in Australia, which makes that hour expensive as well as long.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Australia where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Light rail runs from Central to UNSW and takes about twenty minutes, which is the line most students here use daily. Sydney University has no station of its own: you walk from Redfern or Newtown, both about ten minutes. Trains cover the wider city well and an Opal card caps your weekly spend, which is worth knowing if you are deciding whether a cheaper room further out is really cheaper. The airport is on the train line and about half an hour from the centre, which makes the first arrival easier here than in most Australian cities.
